Racketeering (RICO)

The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) is found at 18 USC 1961 -1968. The comparable RICO Statues in Louisiana are found at La. R.S. 15:1351 -1356. RICO charges are most commonly brought by  Federal Prosecutors; however,  State prosecutors do use the RICO statue on occasion.

The Federal RICO law was enacted in 1970.It was originally used to prosecute the Mafia and others engaged in organized crime. Today, it's application is wide spread, well beyond organized crime.
